On Sunday 27 October 2019, Gastatelier Leo XIII hosts the symposium Intimate Proximities, a collaboration with TextielMuseum Tilburg that coincides with the residency of artist Bram Van Breda and curator Carolyn F. Strauss in the guest atelier.
The symposium explores themes of social, political, and environmental entanglement that have been central to Strauss and Van Breda’s collaboration, and which find material expression in the artist’s final exhibition at Leo XIII, titled BONANZA: a diorama of the near (opening 25 Oct). With this project, the guest atelier has been approached not merely as a hermetic space for the artist and his materials, but rather as a porous and ever-evolving receptacle for a spectrum of impressions, materialities, temporalities, memories, and even fantasies.
Intimate Proximities encourages participants and public alike to consider how an expanded, more inclusive embrace of diverse identities (human/non-human), spaces (distant/near), matter (invisible/tangible), and times (past/present/future) can enable a greater freedom of feeling oneself in, of, and with the world.
During the afternoon at Textielmuseum, talks by artist Clémence de La Tour du Pin and cultural theorist Alena Alexandrova help to shed light on these themes. Immediately following the presentations, the public is invited to join the participants at Gastatelier Leo XIII for a performance by sound artist Glenn Ryszko, a viewing of Bram Van Breda’s exhibition, and a festive ‘finissage’ borrel that closes the 4-month residency period.
