Jamie Kane – Plough

Sat 10 July – Sun 18 July
Gastatelier Leo XIII

Jamie Kane has been working in Gastatelier LeoXIII from March until July 2021 as the winner of the Leoprijs. During this residency he worked together with curator Fenne Saedt. Jamie’s presentation can be visited at the Gastatelier from July 10th until the 18th.

The exhibition will be opened the 10th of July at 17:00u. And on the 18th of July at 17:00, we organize the finissage where Jamie will provide a short filmscreening.

About the exhibition:
Plough shows new sculptures, paintings and text by Jamie Kane, made during the Leoprijs residency. The exhibition takes the transcription of a diary by his ancestor Alexander Johnstone as a starting point.

In his diary Alexander grapples with a forming egalitarian politics, he records home remedies and adapts lines of poems into the news of the day. His fragmented thoughts document someone drafting their hopes for a future after huge social change, whilst holding a sense of complexity, irony and wit.

In Jamie’s works, support structures come prior to what is held: words are dissolved to create space in the gaps. And fragments, sketches and underdrawings take precedent over what is fixed and finished. This results in the forming of an exhibition in which material processes and time have a non-linear relationship.
